Wirral Waters Food Hall Proposal Submitted for Planning

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

You may have seen our recent proposal in the local newspapers featuring a new art-deco food hall in the heart of Wirral Waters.

Evoke Architecture has recently submitted a unique food hall design at Wallasey dock.

The former Royal Swan pub on Dock Road is to be demolished to make way for a 25,000 sq ft dining destination within Peel L&P’s 300-acre dockside masterplan.

Proposals lodged by AP Mitchell Group seek permission to knock down the pub, which has been vacant for more than 15 years, and build a food hall that will have space for seven food vendors.

The Dock Road venue could also be used to host events and features both indoor and outdoor seating. Evoke Architecture is leading on the design of the scheme, which is located within the 13,000-home Wirral Waters regeneration scheme.

Matt Sharp, director at Evoke, said the scheme could become a key asset in the booming area.

“This application seeks to provide a high-quality amenity and social space for the considerable number of residential units either approved or under construction in the area.
“Unlike some retrofit food halls, the scheme has been designed from the outset to be functional with regards to both the dine-in experience as well as the associated delivery services required for locals.”

Sharp said the design takes inspiration from the surrounding area, such as the art-deco-like corner turret features of the existing pub.

“The overall art-deco ‘picture house’ styled appearance of the scheme gives a reminiscent character to the building, that is sympathetic to the aesthetics of the original building and surrounding historic buildings of similar style,” he said.
“The goal is to deliver another exciting and unique design to the ever-changing character of Birkenhead docks during the Wirral Waters development.”
