Evoke Architecture is proud to have played a key role in the delivery of The Reserve, Chester Zoo’s new resort development which has now opened to the public. This landmark project brings together design innovation, sustainable construction, and conservation values to create a unique hospitality offering within one of the UK’s most important zoological institutions. Working closely with Starship Group, our team was involved from the early design stages right through to the successful completion of the scheme.

Our role extended well beyond the refinement of concepts. We re-designed the early spatial layouts to optimise guest experience, developed full technical and building regulation packages, and produced presentation material for use in stakeholder engagement sessions. This ensured that the scheme was well communicated, clearly understood, and supported by all parties involved. Throughout construction, we also provided architectural support across every lodge type, helping to translate the design intent into a high-quality built reality.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the project was the use of advanced off-site construction methods. This approach not only reduced the environmental impact of the works but also provided consistency and precision in the quality of the finished lodges. By assembling much of the structure off-site, the development achieved shorter build times, less disruption within the zoo environment, and a lower overall carbon footprint.

The design philosophy behind The Reserve placed equal emphasis on people, wildlife, and the natural landscape. The site layout was carefully considered to provide an immersive experience for guests while protecting biodiversity and ensuring the welfare of nearby animals. Natural materials and sustainable technologies were embedded throughout the project, reinforcing Chester Zoo’s wider mission to protect habitats and champion conservation. Every decision was guided by the aim of creating a resort that feels integrated with its surroundings, rather than imposed upon them.
For guests, The Reserve offers a tranquil and memorable stay that deepens their connection with the zoo and its conservation values. Each lodge has been designed to enhance comfort and create a sense of retreat, while still allowing visitors to feel close to the unique setting of Chester Zoo. The development not only adds a new dimension to the visitor experience but also strengthens the zoo’s position as a world-class destination for education, conservation, and leisure.
Our Director, Scott Millington (Architect), led the architectural input for the scheme as Project Architect. Scott worked closely with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders throughout the process, ensuring the vision was carried through into every detail of delivery. His role was integral in coordinating the various disciplines, resolving challenges, and maintaining the quality and intent of the design.
"Delivering The Reserve has given us the opportunity to combine design innovation with meaningful conservation goals, and it has been a privilege to collaborate with such a dedicated team of consultants and stakeholders to make the vision a reality." Scott Millington | Director
The Reserve stands as a testament to what can be achieved when architecture, sustainability, and conservation are brought together. For Evoke Architecture, it represents not just a completed project, but a demonstration of our ability to deliver innovative, sustainable hospitality schemes in sensitive and high-profile settings.
